Mine baron, Senator William Andrews Clark, one of the wealthiest men in American History, established Clarkdale in 1912. It was the smelter town for the United Verde Copper Company in Jerome. By 1920 Clarkdale was producing 150,000 pounds of copper per day, making it one of the largest suppliers in the world. The many fascinating stories about Clarkdale’s past will excite and intrigue you. Interestingly, Ghost Riders Tours founder, Jane Goddard has direct ties to Senator Clark. Her grandfather’s brother Lew Godard, farmed the Shay-Go0dwin Ranch until 1906.
