Camp Verde is one of the oldest settlements in Arizona, established as a military fort by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. In 1894 William Goddard, the grandfather of Ghost Riders Tours founder, Jane Goddard,  moved the family of eight by covered wagon from Pagosa Springs, Colorado to the Verde Valley. The party included his wife Maude and their 10-month old daughter Nettie. Maude’s brothers, George, Uriah and Colden Reid as well as her mother Mary Ellen Davis Reid. Camp Verde became their home.
